Million Dollar Baby

wepeel
I saw this movie last weekend (a little late to the party, but that's just the story of my life) and I still can't get it out of my head. I was absolutely floored by it. Devastated. Everything was just so well done, everyone struck just the prefect balance, all the issues handled so delicately. Luckily, I hadn't done much reading up on the film beyond "It's amazing. Go see it." so while I knew there was a turn for the worse in there, I didn't know what or when. I'm glad for that.

Anyway, since I can't seem to shake the movie off, I'm going to by the book Rope Burns by F.X. Toole on which the movie was based on my way home from work today. Anyone read it? I know it's a compilation of short stories, one of which is Million Dollar Baby. Was the story better than the movie? Are they massively different. I've always had to read the source material for any movies/plays/etc. that were based on books, even if it was after the fact. Just wondering if anyone can tell what they thought of this one.

Hello! I saw this movie Sunday the 6th but I've been busy and did't have a chance to post. As a psych nurse I've delt with suicidal folks and guilt and I've had my own feelings to deal with over the years, and this movie captures much of the way of it, including the open ending. Lfe does not always turn out happy, or even give us neat endings.Fifty years ago my great grandfather killed himself a few months after his wife died and he'd been diagnosed with cancer.Thirty five years ago I saw a doctor disconnect life support on a brain dead patient-writing the order "to see if the patient is capable of breathing on his own" knowing full well he could not, and I though then and now he did the right thing. Life isn't just about our "husks" still breathing, but rather about our "self"- soul/mind/being and the quality of life we live.If I am no longer dwelling in here, use what can be donated, and bury the rest.

Hey, I guess I will post now. I actually saw this movie in an advanced screening and thought it was amazing. Because I saw it before all the "controversy," I was not even aware of the twist that was coming. I swear, when that happened, everyone in the audience gasped. It was so amazing to see it without any indication of the twist. I know when I saw it again with my sister she said she knew something was coming, so she spent the first part of the movie waiting for it to come. So, does anyone one else think that even knowing that a twist is coming diminishes the power of the film? I mean, I think it is great either way, but I think the shock really adds something.

So anyway, as you might have guessed, this is my favorite film of the year with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind close behind. I really hope the Academy does the right thing and gives Million Dollar Baby the credit deserves. If Clint doesn't win, I am going to be very upset.

Hi... uh... first post?

I don't know if anyone is actually IN this community, but I saw the movie a few days ago, and can't get it out of my head.

Soooo... I wrote a REALLY short fanfic. Um, it was just something that popped into my head, and that wouldn't leave me alone until I had writtin it down.

Title: "Tricks of the Light and the Heart"
Summary: A "moment" between Frankie and Maggie, after their trip out to visit her family.
Rating: Probably PG or PG 13.
Here you go...Collapse )
